A TAFF WRITER AND A GENTLEMAN

Those of you who have yet to read Matt Beynon Rees have a treat in store. Matt is a Welsh journalist, a former Oxonion and an award winning novelist based in Jerusalem He is the author of a nonfiction book, Fields of Cain, and of exquisitely crafted crime noir novels whose main character is Palestinian Omar Yussef. The novels, the Collaborator of Bethlehem, A Grave in Gaza, The Samaritan's Secret, The Bethlehem Murders, The Saladin Murders and The Fourth Assassin do more than entertain. They expose a view of the Israel-Palestinian conflict rarely glimpsed by outsiders and they introduce characters and ethical questions of enormous complexity. Matt's compassionate, enlightened take on the tragic co-depence of rival political groups in the Middle East is that of someone with years of experience in the field. The high literary quality of his novels places him in the upper echelons of fiction writers. What is more, Matt is a mensch.

THE BIBLIOBURRO PROJECT
There are many places in the world where reading is a privilege. In the autumn of 2008, Simon Romero, of The New York Times wrote about Colombian Luis Soriano, a teacher who travels by donkey in order to bring books to villages where there are no libraries. He calls his project Biblioburro and his fleet of burromobiles includes two burros called Alfa and Beto. Whimsy and panache are alive and well in Colombia.
